Ceramic Chinese figurine with green-brown glaze on a wooden base, shown against a white background, standing calmly upright

Tang sancai civil official and guardian (or strongman) figures remain among the categories most severely overlooked by Chinese collectors at present. It is not difficult to grasp the rank of tomb that would have warranted civil officials standing nearly a metre high—the complete set of Tang sancai burial figures from the tomb of General Liu Tingxun, now in the British Museum, provides an excellent point of reference. Private collectors have yet to show any meaningful understanding of, or collecting trend toward, such objects; pieces of this calibre are far more appropriately destined for museum acquisition. Given that they are appearing at auction in Hong Kong, local institutions—particularly the Hong Kong Palace Museum—ought to regard them as a priority for acquisition.
