This lead-glazed Han dynasty jar is modelled after contemporaneous bronze zun wine vessels. Of cylindrical form, it is adorned with animated mythical beasts clambering across the surface, raised on three animal-form feet and applied with relief mask handles at the sides. A gilt-bronze example with a Boshan-style mountain lid is preserved in the Taipei Palace Museum, acc. no. gutong-2044, illustrating the original form of the type.
Han dynasty green-glazed ware is currently a severely undervalued category in the market.
In the 1980s and 1990s, a fine example could still command a price equivalent to that of an automobile. Subsequently, however, a large influx of excavated pieces that entered circulation through illicit channels flooded the market and, via Hong Kong, dispersed around the world. Prices collapsed almost overnight and have remained depressed ever since, never fully recovering. Reconstructing a Han dynasty aesthetic sensibility and gaining a proper understanding of green-glazed ware has become an essential path of literacy for collectors today.
This tripod lian is modeled in high relief and covered overall with silvery iridescence. The scene of sacred mountains and wild beasts it depicts is a classic embodiment of Han dynasty thought.
