The Northern Qi dynasty (550–577 CE) represents a golden age of Chinese Buddhist sculpture, celebrated for its refined modelling, sensual plasticity, and elegant treatment of the human form. This finely carved stone fragment depicts a bodhisattva’s hand. Measuring 26.5 cm, it displays the graceful proportions and delicate detailing — particularly in the supple fingers and refined contours — characteristic of Northern Qi sculptural aesthetics, which emphasized beauty, corporeality, and spiritual serenity. The piece has distinguished early provenance: it was in the collection of Yamanaka Shunkodo, Osaka, by 1930, and is published in their 1930 catalogue (Kobijutsu kenkyū shiryō, pl. 19, fig. 32). It was subsequently exhibited in the important 1955 exhibition Chugoku Chokoku Ten (Exhibition of Chinese Sculpture) at the Museum of Modern Art, Kamakura & Hayama (exh. no. 80). Presented with its original wood stand and Japanese wood box, this fragment is a significant example for the study of Northern Qi stone carving techniques and the history of early 20th-century Japanese collections of Chinese Buddhist art.
