A review of the recent pricing strategies of Mayuyama & Co., Ltd. reveals a clear trend: pieces with a definitive provenance and established publication record command a premium of 100% to 300% (or more) over those lacking such documentation. This underscores how the value of an object is substantially augmented once its authenticity and significance have been repeatedly validated by both scholarly research and market performance.
Despite its relatively diminutive scale, the asking price of HKD 750,000 is highly justifiable and represents excellent value. By way of comparison, a larger dish of similar design—notably with restorations—realized HKD 1.07 million at the Sotheby’s Hong Kong "Okada Museum of Art" special auction on November 11, 2025. In this context, the present dish is priced most reasonably, offering a compelling opportunity for discerning collectors.

This piece passed from the prominent British dealer Bluett & Sons into the collection of Robert Stanley Hope Smith. A lawyer by profession, Stanley began collecting Chinese ceramics around 1946 and became a member of the Oriental Ceramic Society in 1950, continuing his scholarly pursuits until his passing in 1979. This dish stands as a testament to the orthodox lineage of connoisseurship in British Chinese art collecting.
Tang Sancai (three-color glazed ware), as its name suggests, is a celebrated category of ceramics that flourished during the Tang Dynasty. Renowned for its vibrant palette predominantly featuring green, amber (brown), and white glazes, it has earned profound admiration from subsequent generations. Primarily produced as mingqi (funerary wares), these dishes are believed to have been modeled after the forms of contemporary silverware and metalwork. The gently rounded rim that flares outward provides a sense of spatial expansion, reflecting the cosmopolitan and outward-looking ethos of the Tang Empire as it expanded across the world.
The decorative composition follows the quintessential sancai paradigm: a central medallion featuring a large stylized floral motif surrounded by wax-resist white spots. In this piece, the central Hosogemmon (Precious Blossom/Rosette motif) is executed with rigorous incised lines in a symmetrical arrangement, masterfully rendered through a combination of the white body, amber glaze, and cobalt blue glaze. The transition from the flower's periphery to the rim is marked by a clear demarcation of colors—amber glaze in the mid-section and green glaze near the edge—demonstrating a sophisticated sense of chromatic balance. Furthermore, the myriad of white spots surrounding the rosette radiates toward the rim, imbuing the dish with an exuberant atmosphere.
