Greenish bronze vase with a narrow neck and wide base, showing patina. Set against a white background, casting a soft shadow. Classic look.

The book Tin-Bronze of China (中國の響銅) is widely regarded as the bible and definitive textbook for the study of Chinese xiangtong (響銅, tin-bronze or resonant bronze). Its catalogued item No. 9 — a Northern Dynasties xiangtong — was exhibited in the landmark 1999 special exhibition at the Kuboso Memorial Museum of Art in Izumi, Japan. This epic exhibition of resonant bronzes has been revered by collectors and scholars as an absolute classic and remains the gold standard in the field. Second-hand copies of the catalogue now command prices approaching HKD 10,000.

Owning a Northern Dynasties xiangtong that is both published in this book and exhibited in that historic show is a lifelong dream for many dedicated collectors. Xiangtong has long been a highly sought-after niche category within connoisseur circles, yet it is also one of the most heavily faked. Academic articles on the subject remain scarce, and most research continues to rely heavily on this seminal catalogue published nearly thirty years ago.
