Dizang, ksitigarbha in sanskrit, is known as the savior of all beings in hell, for his vow of not achieving Buddhahood until all hells are emptied. In the Tang dynasty, the deity may appear as a bodhisattva, a Buddha, or a monk wearing jeweled attire, monastic robes, and sometimes with a Buddhist cap.
The naturalistic 'pensive' pose of the present lot is extremely rare and unusual. The Dizang iconography is identified by the halo behind the shaved head and the simple kasaya wore in a way similar to the Buddha. Compare the similar Tang dynasty gilt bronze bodhisattva Dizang from the Nitta Collection and now in the collection of the Palace Museum, Taipei, illustrated on the museum's website, inventory no. 贈銅000182N.
