Dian, the ancient Kingdom established during the mid-Warring States through Eastern Han, centering the Dian Lake on the Yunnan Plateau and extending to the central and eastern Yunnan, present day Southwest China. The culture is known for their vivid depictions of bronze animals and human figures, which were often part of ritual bronze vessels, weapons, or personal adornments.
Bronze bell of this 'cocoon' shape is unique to the Dian region, cast relatively thin compared with the ritual bells of the Central Plain. It is extremely rare to see a Dian bronze bell with such complex design with shallow relives. Compare the bronze bell of this shape with incised diagonal bands of geometric 'swirls', unearthed in 1964 at Dabona, Xiangyun, Yunnan province, illustrated in Zhongguo qingtongqi quanji (Compendium of Chinese Bronzes), Vol. 14, Dian, Kunming, Hong Kong, 1993, no. 211. See also the bronze bell of the same shape but with a lightly incised bird within the crossed bands of 'S' decoration, in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum and illustrated on the museum's website, accession no. 2003.3.1.
