This yongzhong bell is an early Yue ware example with applied glaze, belonging to the category of proto-celadon from the Eastern Zhou period. While faithfully preserving the formal vocabulary of contemporary bronze ritual bells—most notably the orderly rows of bosses, carefully articulated decorative bands, and a tall, well-proportioned tubular shaft—the work introduces a high-fired ceramic body covered with an iron-rich celadon glaze, signalling a decisive step beyond ordinary grey pottery.

Rather than serving as a functional musical instrument, early celadon yongzhong such as this represent a material translation of bronze ritual authority into a newly emerging ceramic medium. The work stands at the intersection of Zhou ritual aesthetics, technological innovation in early celadon production, and the growing symbolic role of glazed wares. Its strong performance at auction, achieving HKD 762,000 against an estimate of HKD 100,000–200,000, underscores the premium placed on rare, research-driven forms within the early history of Chinese ceramics.

modelled in the shape of its contemporary bronze bells, of pointed oval section with the two sides rising up in an arc, set on each side with rows of evenly distributed bosses, divided by two horizontal bands of scrollwork and one vertical undecorated band, all above a short band of scrollwork, the flat top similarly decorated with scrolls, surmounted by a tall tapering tubular shaft with a bulged mid-section issuing a loop handle, below two bands of crosses and a chevron border, wood stand and Japanese wood box

Good overall condition, with only occasional minor restoration/retouching to the mouthrim, a few bosses and tiny sub-bosses. Minor surface wear.
