The present lot belongs to a distinctive group of Southern bronze vessels with engraved, painted or carved decorations. A very similar vase in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art illustrated on the museum's website, accession no. 2007.133, is noted by the curator that the techniques "not only points to a change in aesthetics, but also reflects the development of iron tools, which made engraving bronze surfaces possible."

Based on archaeological finds, bronze long-neck vases of this type were used as 'arrow vase' in the Han dynasty Touhu ritual, and often used in the popular Liubo ("six rods") game sets. A long-neck vase of very similar profile discovered in a Western Han tomb in Yongzhou, Hunan province, containing five arrows when unearthed, is illustrated as a line drawing in Kaogu, 1990, No. 11, p. 1009. See further discussion on this subject by Zhang Shuai and Zhang Wenjie, 'Han dai She li yongqi "Zhong" kao' (Research on the Han Dynasty "Zhong" Vessel in the She Ritual), Palace Museum Journal, 2024, No. 8, pp. 75-83, where the authors illustrated two carved stone pictorial (hua xiang shi) examples of Liubo players flanking a long-neck vase with tallies inside.
