A black vase with a wide mouth and floral designs in red. It stands on a white base against a light gray background.

Warren E. Cox

The provenance of Warren E. Cox holds considerable importance, representing one of the key early American collectors in the field of Chinese ceramics.

Iron-rust glaze has long been undervalued, primarily impacted by the sheer abundance of surviving Shanxi black-glazed ceramics. Nevertheless, superior examples of black glaze genuinely exist—most notably from the Dangyangyu kiln within the Cizhou ware tradition. Owing to their outstanding quality, these are often mistakenly attributed to Ding kiln wares.

Selecting choice specimens from the profoundly underestimated black-glazed wares of the Song dynasty Cizhou kiln family will, once academic recognition and systematic reappraisal are complete, deliver substantial appreciation and rewards.
