The Okada Museum blue-and-white Yuan dynasty moulded ‘dragon’ stem cup, sold for HKD 3.556 million, sits firmly in the market’s “high-end but not peak” tier. Its price stands well above ordinary Yuan dragon stem cups—such as the Christie’s Hong Kong 2011 example at HKD 1.22 million or the Horiuchi Collection cup sold in New York in 2024 for only about HKD 300,000—thanks to its clear provenance, excellent condition, and a solid exhibition record. Though smaller (h. 9.3 cm) than the benchmark pieces—namely the Junkunc cup (HKD 12.175m in 2019) and the Ise cup (c. HKD 4.45m in 2025)—the Okada cup’s 1989 Kuboso Museum exhibition history and its place within the Japanese museum collecting tradition justify its upper-level valuation.

從 Sotheby’s 描述看,品相極好、只一小毛口,並有 1989 年久保惣美術館飲器展覽史和岡田美術館來源,學術與展覽背景不弱,只是尺幅、氣勢和「頭牌 provenance」仍然不及瓊肯、伊勢兩件。

From the auction record of Yuan blue-and-white ‘dragon’ stem cups, a clear hierarchy emerges:
At the very top, the Junkunc cup (Christie’s Hong Kong 1993: HKD 6.175m; Sotheby’s Hong Kong 2019: HKD 12.175m) and the Ise cup (Sotheby’s Hong Kong 9 Sept 2025: c. HKD 4.45m) define the benchmark for truly museum-grade examples with outstanding size (c. 11.5 cm), quality and provenance.
A second tier is formed by pieces such as the Christie’s Hong Kong 2011 “gaozu wan” stem cup (HKD 1.22m), and more recently the Horiuchi collection stem cup sold in New York in 2024 (USD 40,320, roughly HKD 310–320k).
Below that, various London and regional auction examples show prices around HKD 60k–100k, even for genuine late Yuan / early Ming cups, reflecting weaker demand and less confidence in provenance and quality outside the Hong Kong / East Asian core market.
Against this backdrop, the Okada Museum stem cup at HKD 3.556m sits in a very coherent position:
It is clearly above the “ordinary” Yuan dragon stem cups that trade in the low six-figure HKD range;
It is below the very top of the market represented by the Junkunc and Ise cups, which is understandable given its smaller size (9.3 cm) and slightly less iconic status, despite an excellent Japanese museum provenance and the 1989 Kuboso exhibition history.
In short, the price realised can be read as “high-end but not peak”: collectors are paying a premium for a well-documented museum piece from a major Japanese institution, yet still enjoying a noticeable discount compared to the very few canonical Yuan dragon stem cups at the top of the pyramid.
