Within the Chinese collecting world, aesthetic criteria for Jun ware—and for classical ceramics more broadly—remain in a state of ongoing debate and re-alignment. A coherent scholarly consensus has yet to fully settle, while market preferences are often swayed by noise, short-term sentiment, and fluctuating narratives. In such a transitional moment, exceptionally rare forms are paradoxically the most vulnerable to being overlooked, yet they also serve as clear indicators of the anxieties and uncertainties shaping contemporary taste.
This Junyao foliate-rim meiping, dating from the Song to Yuan period, is a prime example. Although restored at the mouth and shoulder, its extreme rarity, distinguished provenance, and substantial publication record place it well beyond ordinary market categories. Yet its final price of HKD 2.54 million remains strikingly low, a result that underscores not the limitations of the vase itself, but the fact that a mature, internally coherent system of connoisseurship among Chinese collectors has yet to be fully established.

Catalogue Note
Jun vases with lobed mouths are exceedingly rare, and this particular meiping appears to be a unique example. Compare, however, three Jun gu-vases with similarly lobed rims: one formerly in the George Eumorfopoulos collection, though with an unsuccessfully fired glaze, illustrated in R.L. Hobson, Catalogue of the Chinese, Corean and Persian Pottery and Porcelain, vol. 3, London, 1926, pl.10, no. C33;
another example was sold in our New York rooms, 4th June, 1986, lot 45, later acquired by T. T. Tsui, and sold again through our same rooms, 11th September, 2012, lot 131; a third piece, previously in the Muwentang Collection, exhibited at the 30th Anniversary of Min Chiu Society, illustrated in Selected Treasures of Chinese Art, Hong Kong, 1990, no.39. Additionally, compare also a Jun bottle vase with a similar mouth-rim, sold at Christie's Hong Kong, 29th November, 2022, lot 2908.
