On 20 November 2025, the identity of the new buyer was made public: Mr. Nicolas Chow of Sotheby’s. In his Instagram note, he mentioned that upon receiving the bowl, which is associated with Zen practice, he became so absorbed in it that he “lost an hour.” At times, we believe we choose an object; yet at other times, it is the object that seems to choose us.

This transmitted Tenmoku tea bowl boasts an illustrious provenance, having once been exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago and originally acquired in Japan by Dikran Kelekian in the early 20th century. The rim bears a lacquer repair identified as dating to the Momoyama period, lending the piece significant academic value as evidence that it was already treasured and preserved in the age of Sen no Rikyū. Closely resembling the legendary “Rikyū Gray” (Rikyū-gure 利休灰) ware, and demonstrably transmitted during Rikyū’s own time, this bowl may be regarded as a rare and tangible embodiment of the Rikyū tea aesthetic and spirit.
