The piece boasts an illustrious provenance, and its unusually large size—measuring 13.4 cm—places it among the rarest extant examples of youji temmoku (oil-spot tenmoku). However, the object itself presents challenges: the surface lacks the luminous patina typically associated with transmitted (i.e., long-preserved) examples, and its status as a denshō piece remains uncertain. Moreover, the extant images in the Enshū inventory do not correspond convincingly to the present bowl, and the uneven, slightly irregular glaze surface raises further questions. Taken together, these factors make it difficult to accept the attribution as aligning with Enshū’s historic taste and discernment.Under such circumstances, its final price of HKD 5.08 million appears unsurprising.
