This Han dynasty jade pig is carved from mottled russet-beige stone, with a rounded and compact body rendered in a plain, unembellished posture that reflects the Han aesthetic of balancing realism with symbolic intent. In Han culture, the pig embodied associations of abundance and sacrificial offering. The present example is of moderate size, well preserved, and with clear provenance, having entered the Western market as early as the 1970s. It can also be compared with related examples in the Winthrop Collection at Harvard University. The final price realized was significantly above the estimate.
