Amber-glazed pottery dogs of the Han dynasty are considerably rarer than their green-glazed counterparts. This example, an amber-glazed pottery figure of a recumbent dog, formed part of the Han dynasty tomb figurine system, in which canines held a distinctive role as symbols of guardianship and domestication. The amber glaze, applied over a red pottery body, imparts a bright yet mellow luster, while the surface remains in an excellent state of preservation. With its imposing size—measuring nearly half a meter in height—this piece is exceptional among extant examples. Combined with its distinguished provenance and association with a noted American collection, the figure realized a price well above its estimate, underscoring the market’s recognition of the rarity and significance of such amber-glazed animal figures.
