The lobed qingbai brush washer produced at the Longquan kilns during the Southern Song dynasty is known in Japan as a kinuta seiji (砧青磁) lobed washer. Most surviving examples are relatively small in size, typically ranging from 10 to 11 centimeters in diameter. The largest known piece may be the exceptionally large flat mizusashi (fresh water jar) preserved in the Kanazawa Nakamura Memorial Museum, which measures approximately 23 centimeters in diameter.

This remarkable vessel bears a box inscription (hakogaki) by Sen Sōtan (1578–1658), the grandson of Sen no Rikyū, with the poetic title “Seigaiha” (青海波, Blue Ocean Waves). It was once in the collection of Hirase Rokkō (平瀬露香), an influential Osaka-based merchant and tea practitioner.

The piece exemplifies the high regard in which kinuta celadon was held by Japanese tea masters, and illustrates the connoisseurship and transmission history of Chinese celadon ware within the context of Japanese chanoyu aesthetics.
