The "净瓶" (jingping), also known as "軍持" (jun-chi, kundika), is a water vessel utilized by Buddhist monks for washing hands or drinking, and is counted among the traditional "Eighteen Possessions of a Bhikkhu." Depictions of its form are present in the murals of the Yulin Caves in Gansu Province. Its distinctive shape features a slender neck with a disc-shaped projection in the midsection for ease of handling.
Above this projection, the neck tapers to a narrow, tubular opening designed as a water outlet. The rounded, bulbous body incorporates a vertical funnel-shaped water inlet positioned just below the shoulder, resting upon an outward-flaring footring. The vessel is covered with a thin, evenly-applied glaze characterized by subtle luminosity and a delicate pale beige hue reminiscent of lightly toasted rice. The ceramic body is robust, compact, and meticulously refined. Exhibiting an elegant simplicity, upright form, and understated aesthetic, this water vessel exemplifies the refined ceramic artistry of Buddhist ritual wares from the Tang Dynasty.
