Weathered Buddha head sculpture on a wooden base, showing faded red and black paint against a plain white background.

Provenance

Mathias Komor, New York, March 1945.

Collection of Pauline B. (1910-2000) and Myron S. (1906-1992) Falk.

Christie's New York, 16th October 2001, lot 218.

The provenance is distinguished, most notably the collection of Myron and Pauline Falk. In 2018, SACA published How Should Six Million Dollars Have Been Spent Twenty Years Ago?, revisiting the 2001 Christie’s New York sale of the Falk Collection. The essay already observed that Tang wares had seen virtually no price appreciation for some two decades. The problem was not the art itself, but a lag in taste: Chinese collectors had not yet widely accepted the principle that artistic quality comes first. Instead, many remained uneasy about the supposed inauspiciousness of objects excavated from tombs, and the brilliance of Tang art was long obscured. The result was a striking mismatch—exceptional artistry at persistently depressed prices. SACA then identified the category as one worth watching.

Eight years on, works of the Tang dynasty and earlier have risen markedly. The return of artistic judgment has been the return of value—something scarcely imaginable in 2018.
