Tall cream ceramic vase with dark leaf designs, isolated on a white background

Among the early twentieth-century collections of Cizhou ware, the classic Song-dynasty meiping form stands out with particular distinction. The function of the meiping has long been debated: one view holds that it served to store wine, the other that it held scriptures. Vessels decorated with themes of wind, flowers, snow and moon, or the cycle of the four seasons, were almost certainly intended for wine. As the author has previously argued, undecorated examples—those with plain ground—are regarded as superior. Although the mouth of the present piece has been restored, it descends from an early provenance, and the story surrounding it retains considerable potential for further exploration.

See a similar vase from the Ataka Collection in the Museum of Oriental Ceramics, Osaka, acc. no. 680. Another, inscribed with different four-character characters likely reading honghua man yuan (“red flowers fill the courtyard”), is in the Art Institute of Chicago, acc. no. 1945.302. Also compare two examples from the Warren E. Cox Collection, illustrated in Warren E. Cox, Pottery and Porcelain, New York, 1970, p. 200; and another in Mayuyama, Seventy Years, Tokyo, 1976, no. 538. Cizhou meiping of this type also bear inscriptions such as “spring, summer, autumn, winter” (春夏秋冬) and “fresh fragrance of superb sake” (清香美酒), suggesting that the vase was very likely used as a wine bottle.
