A ceramic bowl with intricate brown patterns on a white background, shown against a plain white setting.

Small cups of this type measuring 9–10 cm in height performed exceptionally well in this auction. Chinese collectors playfully refer to them as “Nine-Five Supreme” cups — a witty allusion to imperial stature. While clearly a clever marketing tactic, the nickname subtly reveals that every collector harbors an emperor’s dream deep within.

The twisted-body (jiao-tai) pattern on this piece is particularly distinctive, resembling finely woven rattan strips with a natural, rhythmic flow. Beyond its practical use for tea drinking, it also offers considerable artistic appeal.

Catalogue Note

Mr Tse Siu Bong (1924-2017) was a founding member of The Kau Chi Society, Hong Kong. His private study, known to a select few as the Zhongyong Caotang, reflected his modest nature. Renowned for his generosity and broad interests, Mr Tse built an extensive porcelain collection spanning 5,000 years, featuring pieces from numerous kilns across northern and southern China. He valued the historical and cultural significance of these artefacts far above their commercial worth, driven by a desire to showcase the rich lineage of Chinese ceramics.
