Ancient bronze tripod vessel with intricate patterns, handles, and a lid. Green patina adds an aged, historical feel.

This is a fine product from the Houma Foundry, featuring a warm, thick and exceptionally well-preserved patina. With only seven hours remaining until the auction closes, it has yet to receive any bids. Collecting ancient Chinese bronzes demands substantial knowledge, connoisseurship and financial resources. Yet after years of distorted market development, porcelain prices have now surpassed those of ancient bronzes — the very artefacts that represent Chinese civilisation and the Bronze Age. The appreciation for fine Houma workshop pieces has still not entered the mainstream. Indeed, the path of Chinese bronzes remains long and arduous.

Ancient bronze ritual vessel with intricate patterns, lid, and handles on a white background. Aged patina enhances its historical allure.

Catalogue Note

Originating in the pottery forms of the late Neolithic period, the tripod ding is among the most important and iconic vessels produced in China's history; a symbol of power, prosperity, and the nation's ancient past. Here realised in the vernacular of the late Bronze Age - of broad, stately proportions with swirling zoomorphic designs finely cast across the vessels surface - the present ding is a particularly fine and grand example of its type.
