A Stone Relief Fragment of the Head of Garuda, Tang Dynasty

Garuda (Sanskrit: Garuda), known in Chinese as Jialouluo or the Golden-Winged Bird, originates from Indian mythology as the mount of Lord Vishnu. Adopted into Buddhism, it became one of the Eight Legions (Tianlong Babu) and an important Dharma protector. Depicted as a majestic bird-headed figure or colossal raptor with golden wings and a sharp beak, Garuda symbolizes the conquest of poisons and the protection of the Buddhist teachings.

In Tang dynasty Buddhist art, influenced by Indian and Central Asian traditions, Garuda images frequently appear in high relief on the upper sections of Buddha niches, stele tops, or cave ceilings, positioned above the main deity alongside apsaras and guardian figures to form a celestial protective ensemble.

This Tang dynasty stone relief fragment of Garuda’s head measures a substantial 33.5 cm, making it a large and impressive example among surviving relief heads. Skillfully carved with powerful, vigorous features and well-preserved details, it is mounted on a custom wood stand. The piece exemplifies the robust, full-bodied aesthetic of High Tang Buddhist sculpture and the dynamic cultural synthesis between China and India. It stands as a rare and important artifact for the study of Tang protective iconography and stone carving art.
