Blue and white porcelain vase with intricate floral and figure designs, featuring traditional Chinese motifs. Elegant and detailed artistry.

The prestigious pieces from the British Rail Pension Fund once again took center stage at auction. As referenced in Wang Qiusheng’s Caixin column, “How a Railway Retirement Fund Reshaped the Value of Chinese Ancient Art,” this sale represents a pinnacle moment for Chinese ancient art in the modern auction era. Many of these iconic works demonstrated remarkable resilience and explosive power, transcending economic cycles. The HK$174.9 million realized price served as a powerful shot in the arm for this spring auction.

The lot was ultimately won via telephone bid by Marco, hammering down at HK$148 million under paddle No. 8211. With buyer’s premium, the total reached HK$174.9 million, prompting rare cheers, screams, and enthusiastic applause in the saleroom — a scene seldom seen in recent years.
