拍賣筆記 vol.285 蘇富比香港:152.4萬港元售出,北宋至金磁州窰系黑釉堆線帶蓋注壺,岡田美術館 - A Rare Cizhou-Type Black-Glazed Ribbed Ewer And Cover, Northern Song - Jin Dynasty, Sold for 1.524m HKD / Dark ceramic teapot with vertical light stripes, a spout, and a handle. Simple, elegant design on a plain white background.

This Cizhou-type black-glazed ribbed ewer with cover, dated to the Northern Song–Jin period, represents one of the rarest and most refined subtypes within the broader corpus of northern black-glazed wares. Vessels of this ribbed, covered form were produced across multiple kiln sites in Henan, Hebei and Shandong, yet true matched sets with intact lids survive only in very limited numbers.

The most important scholarly reference for this group comes from the Qingliangsi kiln site at Baofeng, Henan, where two closely related ewers were excavated and fully published in 2020. These finds confirm that such ewers formed a coherent and technically sophisticated tradition within the northern black-ware system, rather than being isolated or experimental products. Additional parallels in the National Museum of Korea, Meiyintang, Muwen Tang, and the former Ataka collection further demonstrate the type’s historical breadth and cultural mobility.

Despite this strong academic foundation, the market today continues to undervalue black-glazed wares, largely due to an underdeveloped aesthetic literacy regarding their firing techniques, glaze behaviour, and regional kiln distinctions. As a result, works with clear provenance, museum exhibition history, and full scholarly comparanda—such as the present ewer—trade at levels far below their true art-historical significance.

This example comes from a Japanese private collection, passed through Kochukyo in Tokyo, exhibited at the Okada Museum of Art’s 5th Anniversary exhibition, and published in Masterpieces of the Okada Museum of Art. Given its condition, rarity, and impeccable scholarly framework, the hammer price of HKD 1,524,000 represents a marked undervaluation of a genuinely important black-glazed prototype.
