Northern Dynasties pottery figures do exist in some numbers, yet examples of imposing size and truly fine quality remain scarce. This piece, preserved through the distinguished lineage of Mayuyama Ryusendo, should be regarded as a classic piece of its category. Collecting objects of such high artistic merit has always required not only knowledge but also independence of judgment, demanding a heightened level of cultivation from the collector. In the broader shift of international taste toward that of Chinese buyers, works of this category have, in many respects, become significant casualties.
